Are you aware there are <strong>different types of disc profiles<\/strong> out there ? Is the difference more than a lowercase i ? Yes. Is the Colour Wheel different from DiSC Classic ? Yes.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to know which \u00a0<strong>assessment<\/strong> is actually under discussion. Not all <strong>disc assessments<\/strong> are the same. When you see claims that millions of people have used disc, don\u2019t assume that millions have used the version you might be discussing or considering buying.<\/p>\n<h2>DISC assessment: the flavours<\/h2>\n<p>The <strong>disc model\u00a0<\/strong>is not protected by copyright. The <strong>disc model of behaviour<\/strong> was first proposed by\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.disc-partners.com\/marston-and-wonder-woman\/\">William Mouton Marston<\/a><\/strong>, a Ph.D. psychologist from Harvard. He did not create an assessment tool himself, but others have used his model. Several academics and companies have used his work to create their own psychological inventories.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the assessment author, disc can be an acronym for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Dominance<\/strong> or Drive<\/li>\n<li><strong>Influence<\/strong> or Inspire<\/li>\n<li><strong>Steadiness<\/strong>, Stability or Submission<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conscientiousness<\/strong>, Compliance, Correctness or Caution<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Various <strong>colours are also used to differentiate each personality type<\/strong>. These <strong>colours<\/strong> vary, depending on who wrote the assessment, or which attributes are measured. Sometimes you can have two different models, measuring different attributes, but using the same colours in a<strong> 4 dimensional model<\/strong>: that's confusing, because they do not tell the same story.<\/p>\n<h2>How to choose among the DISC assessments<\/h2>\n<p>The questions<\/p>\n<p>Questions should be easily and accurately answered. They also should have been validated\u00a0 thorough and ongoing research. It's never easy easy\u00a0to find examples of <strong>assesment questions<\/strong>. Most publishers are reluctant to see their questionnaires downloaded and shared.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s an example of a questionaire item from a <strong>free DISC<\/strong> questionnaire:<\/p>\n<p>For each group of four descriptions you should have one\u00a0most like you\u00a0and only one\u00a0least like you.<\/p>\n<p>\u25cb\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 My behavior is well disciplined<\/p>\n<p>\u25cb\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 People see me as being generous<\/p>\n<p>\u25cb\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I am always on the move<\/p>\n<p>\u25cb\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I persevere until I get what I want<\/p>\n<p>This is experienced by some as being hard to answer.DiSC Classic and many disc questionnaires use this type of forced choice questions.<\/p>\n<p>Another <strong>type of questionnaire<\/strong> will use a Likert scale where you rank each item on a five-point scale from\u00a0\u201cnever\u201d\u00a0to\u00a0\u201calways\u201d -\u00a0describes me. They are sometimes experienced as being easier to answer. Everything DiSC profiles use this type of scale until recently.<\/p>\n<p>Look at the number of questions being asked. A 70-item questionnaire is more reliable than a 20-item questionnaire. An\u00a0adaptive testing\u00a0tool, as is currently used by <strong>Everything DiSC profiles<\/strong> is more accurate and even easier to answer.<\/p>\n<p>The report<\/p>\n<p>You can\u2019t do much with a report that gives you only a page or two about your results. The real power of DiSC is in both what it teaches you about yourself and what it teaches you about <strong>interacting with others<\/strong> who have styles unlike your own.<\/p>\n<p>Reports should be easily read, memorable and accurate. They should take care with language, presenting all personalities in a balanced manner. But you probably get what you pay for. Many free profiles rely on possibly outdated questionaires, which are not necessarily based on recent research.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden costs can include up-selling.
